Nanotechnology to avoid problems with ice

Ice causes major problems on airplanes, in wind turbines and in heat exchangers. Today’s methods using heating and chemical treatments are expensive, can be inefficient and non sustainable. Nanotechnology can create surfaces where the ice does not stick. The technology is now being developed in the TopNANO project.

Three nano-projects receive 38 million

 Three nano-projects receive 38 million

Three projects will receive a total of NOK 38 million in funding from the sub-programme Energy Efficiency with Nanotechnology. Total budget of the projects is NOK 89 million. The projects will run for three years from 2010 until 2013. The overall scope of the sub-program is to improve the efficiency of future sustainable energy systems by applying nanotechnology to the transport sector, energy conversion and energy use.

NCoE SVALI, CRAICC and DEFROST are the three Nordic Centres of Excellence that will be funded within the Top-level Research Initiative’s sub-programme Interaction between Climate Change and the Cryosphere. “We are convinced that these NCoEs will do world class research and bring a strong added value to the Nordic research in their fields”, stated a satisfied Chair of the Programme Committee, Magnus Friberg.

The Nordic Top-Level Research Initiative on climate, energy and environment is initiating a continuous evaluation, which will contribute to the development and adjustment the programme's strategies, organisation and operative activities. The aim is partly to contribute actively to the best possible execution of the programme and partly to obtain knowledge which can be used to improve similar future programme initiatives. The project period for the continuous evaluation is May 2010 – March 2014.
