The Nordic Council of Ministers and its three Nordic institutions Nordic Energy Research, Nordic Innocations Centre and NordForsk are now ready to start up the Top-level Research Initiative. With a budget of DKK 384,8 million, the initiative represents a major Nordic venture for climate, energy and the environment.

Rolf Annerberg, Chair of the Management Board, emphasizes the potential for a significant Nordic collaboration within this sector. – This is the largest Nordic programme within research and innovation ever. There are enormous possibilities for research within these areas, and this is definitely something we must cooperate to achieve, he states.

As the leading body of the Top-level Research Initiative, the Management Board is responsible for the programme in its entirety. The project funding is divided into six thematic sub-programmes:

• Effect studies and adaptation to climate change
• Interactions between climate change and the cryosphere
• Integration of large-scale wind power
• Sustainable bio-fuels
• Nanotechnology and energy efficiency
• Co2 - capture and storage

For each programme area, there is a programme committee in charge of calls, grants and the follow-up of research- and innovation projects. The programme committees will announce their calls consecutively during 2009.
